Today, Governor Nixon upheld the rights of voters and local governments by vetoing HB 722. HB 722 was not a paper vs. plastic issue. This bill is about stripping local governments of their ability to make decisions on local issues. Any attempts to override the Governor’s veto will force every town, city, county, fire, sewer, water, and library district to confront the surely precipitous decline down the road of lost local control through intrusive legislation from the General Assembly. There are many important issues facing our great State, including repairing crumbling infrastructure. We, in the General Assembly, should focus our efforts on supporting municipalities through funding fixes to repair roads and bridges rather than undermining their ability to govern locally.
